WOMEN in Guyana are living longer than men, with life expectancy standing at about 73 years for women compared with approximately 67 years for men, a gap that should prompt greater attention to healthier lifestyles.

This is according to Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony as he was delivering remarks at a fitness walk hosted by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs as part of their calendar of activities to observe Amerindian Heritage Month 2026.

While encouraging Guyanese to exercise regularly, the health minister stressed that physical activity must be matched with better dietary choices if the country is to reduce the impact of chronic non-communicable diseases.

“So, make wise decisions, don’t overdo the alcohol. Do not smoke. That, too, is important. Live a healthy life, and if you live a healthy life, then you will see your life expectancy, go up,” Dr. Anthony iterated.

He warned that excessive consumption of carbohydrates, sugary foods and fast food can contribute to unhealthy weight gain and increase the risk of chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes.

Dr. Anthony encouraged Guyanese to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diets, and make healthier food choices as part of a broader commitment to active living.

He added, “Many of these things can be avoided or delayed if we exercise regularly.”

He said maintaining an active lifestyle, eating properly, and avoiding harmful habits can help Guyanese live longer and healthier lives.

The call forms part of the Ministry of Health’s wider push for preventative health and greater public awareness of lifestyle-related risk factors for non-communicable diseases. (DPI)
