POLICE are investigating the alleged theft of approximately 90 feet of copper cable valued at $1.62 million from the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge on the East Bank Demerara.

The theft reportedly occurred between midnight on August 23 and 9:00 am on September 1, 2026.

According to investigators, the bridge is equipped with LED lights mounted on steel poles along its high span. The lights, which are powered by a generator located beneath the bridge, are capable of displaying various colours and were last operated on August 23.

At about 6:30 pm on August 31, an electrical maintenance engineer attempted to illuminate the bridge in the colours of Trinidad and Tobago’s national flag in observance of that country’s Independence Anniversary. However, only the lights on the northern side were functioning.

The engineer and his team subsequently inspected the southern side of the bridge at about 9:00 am on September 1 and discovered that approximately 90 feet of 4/350 KCMIL copper cable had been cut and removed from a metal trunking box.

The matter was reported to the Providence Police Station at about 9:30 am, following which detectives visited the scene.

The area was photographed and processed as part of the investigation, while CCTV footage is being reviewed to determine how the cable was removed and identify those responsible.

Police said investigations are continuing.
