Round Three of the Pegasus Weekly Chess League, organized by Drayton’s Chess Club in partnership with the Pegasus Chess Club and Guyana Chess Federation, continued on Monday evening at the Atlantic Meeting Room, Pegasus Hotel, with another competitive night of chess producing movement in the standings and setting up a clash between the league’s two remaining perfect scorers.
The feature encounter on Board One saw Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Jessica Callender, playing the white pieces, face returning national player and mechanical engineer Davion Mars.
The game began relatively calmly before developing into a complicated middlegame with opportunities for both players. Deeper analysis of the encounter showed that Callender missed a critical continuation around move 14 which could have given her an advantage of approximately +1.
Despite that missed opportunity, Callender navigated her way through the complications and eventually emerged with an extra pawn, the bishop pair and the more favourable position.
However, Mars refused to allow the material deficit to dictate the game.
Instead of passively defending the pawn-down position, he launched a dangerous counterattack which forced Callender to solve increasingly difficult problems over the board.
The pressure also began taking its toll on the clock. With Callender’s remaining time eventually dropping below one minute, she was forced to defend a complicated position with very little time available to calculate.
Several inaccuracies followed as her position began to collapse under the combined pressure of Mars’ counterattack and the clock. Callender eventually ran out of time, handing Mars the victory and allowing him to preserve his perfect start to the League.
Mars now sits on three points from three rounds alongside Keron Sandiford, who also maintained his perfect record with a victory over Raymond Sookdeo.
That sets up what should be one of the most important encounters of the season so far, with Mars and Sandiford scheduled to meet in Round Four in a battle between the League’s two remaining perfect scorers.
Ryan Oniel McKay also continued his strong start, defeating Juliana Persaud to move onto two points and third place in the standings, while Callender’s first defeat saw her fall to fourth, also on two points.
There was movement further down the table as Martin Poon climbed three places after drawing with Odinnie Nehezie Reece, moving to 1.5 points.
Sachin Beharry also climbed three positions in the standings and now sits on 1.5 points, while Jaden Taylor recorded his first point of the season and moved up two places.
Round Three therefore leaves the League with a clear battle developing at the top, but with four rounds still remaining, several players remain within striking distance as the inaugural season continues.
