THE education fraternity is mourning the passing of retired St Joseph High School Principal and distinguished Mathematics educator, Nathram Raghubansi, fondly known as “Sir Raghu.”
Raghubansi dedicated more than 30 years to the teaching profession, including 22 years at St Joseph High School, where he helped shape the lives of generations of students.
Minister of Education Sonia Parag, in a statement, extended condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues and students.
“Sir Raghu may have departed this material world, but his legacy lives on in the impact he has made on the lives of countless students and their families,” the minister said.
Born and raised on the Essequibo Coast, Raghubansi began his career as an acting teacher of Mathematics and Geography at Abram Zuil Secondary School.
He was seconded to St Joseph High School in 2000 and subsequently served as Head of the Mathematics Department and Deputy Headteacher. In 2018, he was appointed principal, a position he held until his retirement in 2022.
The school described him as an exemplary and hands-on leader who combined humility with firm discipline, accountability and a commitment to maintaining high standards.
During his tenure, Raghubansi expanded the school’s Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination programme and successfully guided the institution through the transition to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was also deeply involved in sports and other co-curricular activities and was remembered as one of the driving forces behind the success of Wenishema House at the school’s annual Inter-House Athletics Championships.
“Leadership is not simply spoken about; it is displayed through service, action and selflessness,” the school said while reflecting on his approach to service.
Raghubansi was also a recipient of an award from the Guyana Teachers’ Union for his contribution to education.
His wife, Tulsidai Raghubansi, succeeded him as principal of St Joseph High School following his retirement.
The school said his legacy would continue through his family and the many students whose lives and careers were influenced by his teaching and leadership.
“We are better having known him, having felt his love and care, and having benefitted from his service,” the school stated.
Raghubansi was remembered as a true champion of the school’s motto, “To Know, To Love, To Serve.”
