East Canje teen hospitalised after cutlass confrontation with cousins

A 19-year-old man remains hospitalised in an unconscious state following an alleged confrontation involving three of his cousins at Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje, Berbice.
Police said the incident occurred at approximately 22:00 hrs on Friday, August 28, 2026.
Initial investigations revealed that the teenager, who is unemployed and resides at Sheet Anchor Village, was in the company of a 27-year-old woman when he became involved in a misunderstanding with three male cousins, two aged 19 and the other 18.
The disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the men allegedly armed themselves with cutlasses and assaulted each other.
Police said the 19-year-old was eventually pulled away from the confrontation by the woman. Approximately five minutes later, he collapsed and lost consciousness.
He was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted in an unconscious state. He remains under medical observation and is awaiting the results of a CT scan.
Police noted that no visible wounds were observed on the exposed parts of his body.
Detectives visited the scene at approximately 22:10 hrs.
Two of the alleged participants, aged 19 and 18, are currently in custody at the Central Police Station and are assisting with the investigation.
Investigations are ongoing.
