Valley Boys of T&T on six-match tour of Guyana
THE Over-50 Valley Boys cricket team from Trinidad & Tobago is currently in Guyana, where it is involved in a six-match T20 series with over-50 teams from Demerara and Essequibo.
The Trinidadians face Soesdyke Masters today at the Police Sports Club ground Eve Leary which will be their fifth game before travelling to the Essequibo Coast tomorrow for their final game at the Hampton Court ground.
The Valley Boys will spend Sunday at the beautiful Mainstay Lake to enjoy one of the many tourism opportunities available to overseas sports teams visiting these shores.
According to former Berbice U-19 and senior team bowler Luke Lattif who has been residing in the Twin Island Republic for the past 25 years, the team will depart Guyana on Tuesday evening.
“This is not the first time that many of our players have come to Guyana. We are enjoying the tour and sights and sounds of my Country. In 1989 our Captain Mukesh Persaud came here for the first time to play in the Regional U-19 Tournament when I was a standby player for Guyana,” informed Latiff, who still plays competitive cricket in Trinidad.
The tourists lost their first match by seven wickets to Everest Masters at Camp Road after being limited to 131-6 in 20 overs.
Former first-class off-spinner Mukesh Persaud made an unbeaten 51 while Cecil Ramlat made 16. e
Surajpaul Ramdeen had 2-14 for Everest Masters who reached 133-3 on the back of Shazam Ramjohn’s 77. National Selector Surendra Hiralal scored 25 while Latiff recorded 2-36 for the visitors.
In their second game in Parika, East Bank Essequibo, Parika Legends made 146 with guest player Anil Beharry taking 4-12 with his left-arm spin.
Valley Boys lost by eight runs although Beharry clobbered 27 not out from eight balls with four sixes to be named Man-of-the-Match.
Valley Boys’ first win was at Lusignan when East Coast Masters made 146-2 in 20 overs with Vishal Gobin scoring 46.
Beharry’s pugnacious 72, which included a six and 11 fours, helped Valley Boys post 149-7, earning him the Man-of-the-Match award.
In their last match on Wednesday, Valley Boys defeated Windsor Forest by four wickets.
The home team made 155-7, with Lalta Sukdanadan top-scoring with 79, before Valley Boys responded with 156-6 in 18.3 overs, with Latiff 22 not out, and Amazad Mohammed (21) leading the way.
