THE Guyana-Suriname Ferry Service remains suspended as authorities from both countries continue efforts to resolve a dispute over the operational requirements of the M.V. Canawaima, with the Government of Guyana exploring alternative vessels to restore the service.
The Government said on Tuesday that officials from Guyana and Suriname have remained in constant and daily contact since the suspension began, as efforts continue to have the ferry service resume as soon as possible.
According to the Government, two technical inspections of the M.V. Canawaima were conducted in recent days by maritime experts from both countries. The experts concluded that the vessel could remain in operation until it enters drydock within the next three months.
However, despite the technical assurances, which were provided in writing, the Maritime Authority of Suriname (MAS) has insisted that certain matters that would ordinarily be addressed during drydocking be undertaken immediately.
The Government said it supports the safe travel of members of the public and considers safety a priority, while acknowledging the inconvenience caused to persons who depend on the ferry service.
As part of efforts to address the disruption, Guyana had proposed an alternative vessel to operate the route, but that proposal was rejected by MAS.
The Government is now seeking to put forward another alternative vessel to the Surinamese authorities, while simultaneously continuing discussions with MAS to determine whether the existing service can resume, even on a short-term basis.
The Government also reminded travellers that immigration services remain available to persons using small boats to travel between Guyana and Suriname.
Persons travelling to Suriname by small boat are required to report to the Immigration Office at the Moleson Creek Terminal for processing before departure. Upon arrival in Suriname, they must report to the Immigration Office in New Nickerie.
Travellers departing Suriname are likewise required to report to the respective immigration offices for immigration processing.
The Government said it is continuing to pursue all available options to restore the ferry service and assured the public that “everything possible” is being done to have operations resume as soon as possible.
It also thanked members of the public for their patience and understanding and apologised for the inconvenience caused by the suspension.
