FOR more than four decades, Nirmala Bisessar Persaud has quietly built a career defined by hard work, resilience and service, leaving her mark across several of Guyana’s key public and private institutions.
Her professional journey, which began in 1985 at the Accountant General’s Department, has taken her through the Auditor General’s Office, Demerara Mutual Life and, most notably, the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), where she served for two decades.
In 1988, Miss Persaud was transferred to the Auditor General’s Office, where she continued to build her knowledge and experience in finance and public administration. She remained there for 10 years before embarking on another chapter of her career.
In 1998, she joined Demerara Mutual Life, taking with her the discipline, knowledge and experience gained during her years in public service.
However, it was in 2006 that Miss Persaud began what would become one of the most significant periods of her professional life when she joined the ERC.
Over the next 20 years, she served the constitutional body with dedication, developing professional relationships and contributing to the work of an institution responsible for promoting harmony and good relations in Guyana’s diverse society.
Her two decades at the ERC represent far more than a period of employment. They reflect years of commitment, responsibility, collaboration and service, as well as the friendships and experiences formed along the way.
Miss Persaud’s career has not been defined solely by the institutions in which she worked or the positions she held, but also by the consistency with which she approached her responsibilities. Miss Persaud is also the proud mother of a 35-year-old daughter, who pursued a career in education. Her daughter said her mother’s example has been a constant source of inspiration, particularly in demonstrating how dedication to a professional career can be balanced with the responsibilities of motherhood.
Growing up, she watched her mother navigate the demands of work and family life with commitment and perseverance. Those experiences, she said, helped shape the woman she has become and influenced her own approach to her profession as an educator.
