DEVELOPMENT is happening in all areas across Guyana, and at the heart of it is training of personnel. Through the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), tourism stakeholders are taking hold of opportunities to enhance their skills, services and product offerings to take the tourism sector forward.
Recently, the GTA through Harobed Training, facilitated two two-day Leadership Growth training sessions. The first brought together 22 persons on August 4 and 5, 2026 in Georgetown. Then on August 10 and 11, 2026 in Bartica, Region Seven 16 persons participated in a session that was led by Mrs. Deborah King of Harobed Training.
The training sessions focused on strengthening leadership skills, effective communication, decision-making, teamwork, and personal development to improve workplace relationships and performance.
This particular training formed part of the GTA’s ongoing commitment to building capacity within the tourism sector by equipping participants with the skills needed to contribute positively to their organisations and communities.
At the same time, the Tourism Authority facilitated a three-day Tour Guide Training from August 4 to 6, 2026 in Kwakwani, Region Ten. This training was led by Senior Tour Guide, Jamal Thomas, bringing together eight participants.
As part of its follow-up to commitments made at the National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference 2026, to support communities on their community-based tourism journey, the GTA facilitated a Naturalist Guide Training for 24 Sand Creek residents.
This training was led by Kenneth Butler, a Master Trainer attached to the GTA. The areas focused on were naturalist guiding and interpretation, local knowledge and storytelling, safety and responsible tourism, identifying and interpreting plants, wildlife and landscapes, and practical field guiding skills.
Theses training sessions support the GTA’s efforts to build local capacity, strengthen community-based tourism opportunities and equip communities to develop and showcase their natural and cultural heritage.
Moreover, the GTA, alongside the Guyana National Bureau of Standards recently announced that they are registering persons for upcoming food safety training sessions.
The training is open to food handlers, restaurant and café staff, hotel and hospitality employees, caterers, chefs and cooks, food manufacturers, processors, food vendors, quality assurance personnel and anyone involved in preparing, processing, packaging or serving food. Successful participants will receive a certificate at the end of the programme.
