THE Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has rejected claims that a Coast Guard rank injured while carrying out operational duties along Guyana’s western border was not adequately supported, saying the serviceman received medical treatment and continues to receive physical and psychological care.

In a statement, the GDF said the assertions being circulated publicly were inaccurate and undermined both the injured rank and members of the Force serving in defence of Guyana and its people.

The rank was injured during an attack on May 29, 2026, while performing operational duties on the country’s western border. Following the incident, he was medically evacuated to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he received immediate treatment and was admitted for observation.

The GDF said the serviceman was subsequently placed under medical supervision and specialist follow-up care through both the GPHC and the GDF Medical Corps.

He was readmitted to the GPHC on August 1, where doctors surgically removed a projectile that had remained lodged in his leg since the May attack. He was discharged two days later, on August 3, and is currently on authorised sick leave.

According to the GDF, the support provided to the injured rank has extended beyond his physical recovery. He continues to receive psychological support through the GDF Medical Corps, while administrative processes relating to his welfare and that of his family are also being addressed.

The Force said it remains committed to the care and welfare of personnel injured in the line of duty and will continue providing the necessary assistance throughout the serviceman’s recovery and rehabilitation.

The statement comes amid public concerns over the treatment and welfare of the rank following his injury, with the GDF maintaining that the measures taken demonstrate its commitment to supporting personnel wounded while serving the country.
