Dear Editor,
THE experiences children encounter during their early years can shape who they become and influence their emotional, social and mental well-being throughout life.
While childhood is often viewed as a time of innocence and growth, many children face challenges that can leave lasting effects if they are not recognised and addressed.
Experiences such as abuse, neglect, violence or prolonged exposure to stressful environments can impact a child’s sense of safety, self-esteem and ability to form healthy relationships. The effects of childhood trauma do not simply disappear with time; without proper support, they can continue to affect a person well into adulthood.
This is why creating safe and supportive environments for children is so important. Children need adults who will protect them, listen to them and provide the guidance and care necessary for healthy development.
Supporting children who have experienced trauma requires compassion, patience and access to the right resources. Healing is possible when children are surrounded by people who believe in them and are committed to their well-being.
At ChildLink Inc. we play a vital role in supporting children and families by providing care, guidance and interventions for children who have experienced trauma. Through our child protection services, counselling support and advocacy efforts, ChildLink helps children process difficult experiences while creating safe spaces where they feel heard, valued and protected.
The organisation also works to equip parents, caregivers and communities with the knowledge needed to recognise signs that a child may be experiencing trauma, understand their emotional needs and respond with compassion, support and appropriate action.
As a society, we must recognise that investing in children is investing in the future. Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up feeling safe, loved and supported.
Yours faithfully,
Daniela Araujo
