THE government’s recent introduction of a $20,000 transportation grant for pensioners is helping to ease their travel costs, with several beneficiaries describing the assistance as timely.
Seluchan Arjune welcomed the initiative, noting that the assistance provides more funds specifically for transportation.
“At least it will help a lot. It’s some extra money to spend on transportation. Instead of using all your pension money, you get some extra,” he told the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Saturday.
DPI also caught up with Munilall (only name given), who explained that the assistance has already made it easier for him to travel and attend to his needs.
“It helped me to go to NIS and other places where I have to go,” Munilall explained.
He said the grant is particularly useful because pensioners sometimes have to spend additional money on a taxi to simply uplift their monthly allowances.
Another beneficiary, Gulab Singh, stated that finding money for transportation can be stressful at times.
“You have to pay $500 to go and $500 to come. So that is $1,000 you have to pay,” Singh shared. “I feel pretty grateful about the grant.”
He expressed gratitude to the government for the intervention, which he believes is contributing significantly to scores of senior folks like himself.
The $20,000 transportation assistance forms part of the government’s broader efforts to provide targeted support to pensioners and improve their ability to access essential services while reducing the financial pressure associated with transportation. (DPI)
