— Minister Benn says communities must help safeguard government investments
RESIDENTS of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, are being encouraged to take greater responsibility for protecting roads and other public infrastructure, as the government prepares to undertake further upgrades within the community.
Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn, made the appeal during a recent community engagement in Kaneville, where she outlined findings from an assessment of the area and proposed improvements under the government’s Model Village Initiative.
Benn said that while the government will continue investing in roads, drainage and other critical infrastructure, residents also have an important role in ensuring those investments are protected and properly maintained.
“Government cannot do it alone,” Benn told residents.
She pointed to instances where newly constructed roads have been affected by mud, sand, garbage and wood waste being placed along road shoulders.
The minister said communities should work collectively to ensure newly constructed infrastructure does not deteriorate prematurely because of improper use or inadequate maintenance.
“Government ought not to have to come back to fix a road in less than a year,” she said.
Benn also raised concerns about building materials being stored along road shoulders and other public spaces during construction activities.
She explained that materials such as sand, stone and lumber can obstruct traffic and drainage systems and contribute to the deterioration of infrastructure intended to benefit the entire community.
The issue takes on added importance as the government prepares to undertake further development works in Kaneville, including improvements to roads and drainage, sidewalks, bridges and other public infrastructure.
Against this backdrop, Benn encouraged residents to regard themselves as partners in the development of Kaneville and to work closely with their Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) to maintain improvements after works are completed.
“I really want each and every one of you to see yourselves as part of this process as well,” Benn said.
“Government is going to help you to beautify, to improve this community, this village of Kaneville. But after that, it is for you to maintain it in collaboration with your NDC.”
The minister’s appeal forms part of the broader emphasis of the Model Village Initiative on community ownership, with residents expected to play an active role in maintaining and protecting investments aimed at improving their quality of life.
