THE Ministry of Public Works has issued an urgent advisory to drivers, vehicle operators, and residents along the East Bank Demerara corridor, demanding that all active work zones remain clear of unattended, disabled, or improperly parked vehicles to avoid safety hazards and construction delays.
The appeal comes amid ongoing operations on the GY-L1081 East Bank Demerara Road Improvement project. According to ministry officials, construction crews are attempting to execute key reconstruction phases while simultaneously maintaining traffic flow and access for local residents, businesses, and the travelling public.
However, officials noted that broken-down vehicles, improperly parked equipment, trailers, and stored materials left within construction limits are severely disrupting work schedules and prolonging public inconvenience.
“While unforeseen vehicle breakdowns may occur, leaving such vehicles within active work zones for extended periods is unacceptable and avoidable,” the Ministry stated, emphasising that obstructed work zones directly contribute to project delays and pose significant safety risks to both workers and commuters.
To support the safe and timely completion of the roadway, the Ministry has requested that all road users comply with the following measures: Promptly remove any disabled or broken-down vehicles from the roadway and surrounding construction areas; refrain from parking, storing, or leaving vehicles, trailers, equipment, or materials within construction limits; strictly observe and comply with all posted traffic signs as well as directions from traffic-control and site personnel; and maintain clear access to active work fronts, road shoulders, and temporary access routes required for construction equipment.
