THE government will soon roll out a special housing programme targeting the country’s most vulnerable citizens, as it moves to eliminate housing backlogs in several regions by the end of next year, and regularise land ownership for hundreds of long-standing residents.

Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo made this announcement during a Public Day event in Linden on Tuesday.

He revealed that one-bedroom homes will be constructed for elderly persons, people living with disabilities, abandoned individuals, and other truly destitute citizens who are unable to build homes on their own.

He said the initiative forms part of the government’s wider housing agenda, which seeks to ensure that vulnerable Guyanese are not left behind in the country’s development.

Outside of housing, the government, through the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, continues to administer a broad range of programmes aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens, including old-age pensions, public assistance for persons with disabilities, and individuals facing financial hardship, as well as child protection and other social services.

Recognising the country’s growing elderly population, the government has also committed to expanding home-based care services, and improving access to healthcare through telemedicine, mobile health units, and virtual clinics, particularly for seniors living in rural and hinterland communities.

Plans outlined in Budget 2026 also include co-investment in elderly care facilities, the construction of a new senior citizens’ home and improvements to services and living conditions at the Palms Geriatric Home.
