DID you read the Stabroek News editorials while the newspaper was in existence? The editorials reflect what a newspaper believes in and accepts as fact. Some of those editorials took us back to the 1960s, when Guyana was divided by dangerous racist and political sentiments.
Some of those editorials were neat, euphemistic, and grammatical cuss-downs of the Government of Guyana and the PPP. While contributing enormously to the political and ethnic divide in Guyana, that very newspaper would inform us of the huge racial and political separation that exists in Guyana and is the country’s stumbling block to a secure future. There is a complete blackout of the role of that very newspaper in the widening of political and racial divisions.
Do you read the things that Alissa Trotz wrote? Here are the words of Ms. Trotz: “As Guyanese, we have not ever found a way to comprehensively reckon with the legacy of the 1960s. It is the Achilles heel that will continue to destroy Guyana.” Ms. Trotz has never mentioned and will never mention that her writings have contributed to our inability to surmount the traumas of the 1960s.
In over ten years of editing a column named, “In The Diaspora” in the Stabroek News, Ms. Trotz never assigned even a paragraph of acknowledgement of some of the positive directions of the Ali presidency. The hero of Ms. Trotz is Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine who passed away recently. Dr. Roopnaraine contributed in no small way to the political schism in this country. Ms. Trotz is a dyed-in-the-wool aficionado of the WPA, a party that supported the rigging of the 2020 national election.
Do you read the things Janet Bulkan wrote and writes? Here is what Ms. Bulkan noted last week: ‘This country and its citizens are in urgent need of a few miracles. To vanquish the darkness that hangs over Guyana and devastates it. Guyanese have become so accustomed to hypocrisies from the highest levels that they are now numbed beyond feeling.”
Ms. Bulkan will not tell us and never tell us where the sources of that hypocrisy and darkness are. She will not because like Stabroek News, like Alissa Trotz, like the Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA), like Kaieteur News, like Transparency International Guyana Inc. (TIGI), like Red Thread, the toxic pungency injected into the political culture of Guyana has come from them.
So what Stabreoek News, Alissa Trotz, Bulkan, and others of their ilk have done and are doing, is a form of psychic acrobatics that border on Mephistophelean, Kafaquesque, Faustian evil. They stir the pot of ethnic and political insecticide, then when the Macbethian brew spills onto the sidewalk, they blame the parapet cleaner for not doing his job.
We must never forget the GHRA and TIGI stood silent during five months of election rigging in 2020 but described the transparent, free and fair election of 2025 as flawed. We must not forget the incitement role the GHRA played in the violent, ethnic rampage in Cotton Tree in September 2020 over the murder of two African youths.
This same Bulkan described one of the most politicized and politically biased journalists in Guyana’s history, Anand Persaud, then editor of the Stabroek News, as the most consequential Guyanese from the late 20th century to the present time. Any school boy reading that and knows about the dozens and dozens of heroes this country has produced would describe Ms. Bulkan’s interpretation as a vulgar despicability. Either Ms. Bulkan is a troubled soul or a comical personality.
Yesterday, (Thursday), there was more evidence of who expands the toxic environment of Guyana. Here are the words of Vincent Alexander: “The political environment in Guyana is extremely toxic, with any and everything taking on antagonistic political dimensions. In such circumstances, transparency, inclusion and openness, are essential to the detoxing of the environment.”
Do you anticipate what Alexander would say if you ask him if he can be considered one of the most enduring contributors to the lethal and poisonous horizon of the country? Would he say no but factually he is. To this day, Mr. Alexander maintains that the first declared results of Friday, March 6, 2020 of the general election by the Chief Election Officer, remains a valid declaration. One of the events that played a huge role in expanding the toxic environment of Guyana was the 2020 election.
Guyana was in a place of darkness then, and Janet Bulkan certainly did not show any impulse in sweeping away that darkness. How could she and Alexander sweep away what they created? This country needs a dozen Freudian scholars to examine the flawed minds that roam over it.
