GOGEC welcomes international inquiry into MV Barima tragedy

THE Guyana Oil and Gas Energy Chamber (GOGEC) has welcomed the Government’s decision to establish an independent five-member international Commission of Inquiry into the sinking of the MV Barima, describing the move as a decisive step towards ensuring accountability, transparency and public confidence following the national tragedy.

In a statement, the Chamber commended President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the Government for appointing a panel of international experts to conduct a comprehensive and impartial examination of the circumstances surrounding the vessel’s sinking.

According to GOGEC, the composition of the Commission, which includes specialists in maritime law, marine engineering, navigation and judicial affairs, reflects the Government’s commitment to ensuring that the investigation is conducted with the required expertise, independence and credibility.

The Chamber noted that the loss of lives and the far-reaching impact of the tragedy on affected families and communities underscore the need for a thorough and transparent inquiry.

GOGEC said the inclusion of internationally recognised professionals from Belize, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Poland demonstrates Guyana’s commitment to upholding high standards of governance, justice and maritime safety.

The Chamber expressed confidence that the Commission’s findings would provide important recommendations to strengthen maritime operations, improve safety protocols and reduce the likelihood of similar incidents occurring in the future.

“The appointment of respected experts in maritime law, marine engineering, navigation and judicial affairs reflects the Government’s commitment to ensuring a comprehensive, transparent and impartial examination of the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking national tragedy,” GOGEC said.

The Chamber also extended its continued sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives, persons who remain missing and all others affected by the tragedy.

As Guyana continues to experience rapid economic growth and increased maritime activity, GOGEC said it supports initiatives aimed at promoting accountability, transparency and the protection of human life.

The Chamber said it stands firmly behind the Government’s efforts and looks forward to the Commission carrying out its work independently and professionally in the best interest of the people of Guyana.
