A DEDICATED team of eight psychologists from the Ministry of Health’s Mental Health Unit continues to deliver psychological support to survivors and families of the MV Barima tragedy.
The team, which has its primary operations at Port Kaituma and Mabaruma, is also executing outreaches at White Water, Black Water and other communities.
For Terenna Bacchus, a psychologist who arrived in the region in the immediate aftermath, the work is deeply personal.

“This process is not something that can be done short term. It must be long term,” Bacchus said.
Since day one, she and her colleagues have been holding sessions, listening to stories, and helping families navigate loss.
Dr. Mark Constantine, Clinical Psychologist and Head of Psychological Services at the Ministry of Health, said: “We’re here for the long haul,” Dr. Constantine stated firmly. There will be long-term support for grieving families and survivors.”
The road has not been easy. According to Dr Constantine, one of the biggest hurdles has been simply finding people.
Many lost phones, documents, and other belongings in the tragedy, making follow-up difficult. Some families have already buried loved ones, but the emotional wounds remain open.
Mental health professionals say trauma doesn’t follow a timeline. That’s why the ministry is committing to sustained counselling rather than a one-time intervention.
“We understand post-trauma,” Dr. Constantine said, adding: “Healing takes time, and our commitment is to be present through all of it.”
In communities still rebuilding, that promise of continuity is what many families are holding on to.
The team from the Ministry of Health said that they will continue to provide support and counseling to affected families.
