THE Guyana Police Force Traffic Department recorded 2,040 traffic offences between July 19 and 25, 2026, with speeding, failure to wear safety helmets, seatbelt violations and dangerous driving practices accounting for a significant number of the cases.
According to the department’s weekly traffic enforcement figures, speeding was the most prevalent offence, with 461 cases recorded during the period. This was followed by 111 cases involving motorcyclists who failed to wear safety helmets, 92 seatbelt violations, 83 cases of motorists leaving vehicles in dangerous positions and 80 cases involving tinted motor vehicles.
Police also recorded 69 cases involving motor vehicles without functioning front lights and 41 involving vehicles without functioning rear lights. Fifty drivers were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, while 49 cases involved pillion riders being carried without safety helmets.
Other offences recorded included 58 breaches of the conditions of prescribed fitness, 46 unlicensed drivers, 28 breaches of traffic light signals and 12 cases of faulty packing. The figures were released as the Traffic Department continued a combination of enforcement and public education initiatives aimed at improving road-user compliance and reducing traffic-related risks.
During the week, police conducted lectures and awareness activities for drivers, patrons, bar operators and members of communities, while also participating in community outreach initiatives and radio programmes.
The outreach activities were conducted in several communities and at various locations across the country, including Parfaite Harmonie, Westminster, Lust-en-Rust, La Grange, Nismes, Goed Fortuin, Vreed-en-Hoop, Den Amstel, Leonora, Ruimveldt, Georgetown, Albouystown, East La Penitence, Kitty, Turkeyen, Diamond and communities in Linden and the South Rupununi.
The Traffic Department also conducted awareness engagements at bars and other entertainment establishments, including Sita’s Bar, Moses Bar, Cheetos Bar and Musse Bar, as well as at beer gardens along La Penitence Public Road and Independence Boulevard.
Additional outreach was conducted at locations such as Quick Trip Taxi Service, Century Tamara Logistics, Cevons Waste Management and through NCN 102.5 FM.
The enforcement figures highlight the continued road-safety challenges posed by speeding, impaired driving, non-use of protective equipment and disregard for basic traffic regulations. Police have consistently urged motorists, motorcyclists and other road users to exercise greater caution, obey traffic laws and take personal responsibility for protecting themselves and other road users.
