Commonwealth Games 2026
THE Guyanese swimming trio of Olympian Aleka Persaud, Chase Thompson, and Delroy Tyrell put in decent performances, but none advanced out of their heats at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, England.
Thompson, competing in the men’s 100-metre breaststroke, swam 1 minute 15.06 seconds for third place behind Thomas Chen and Sukumar Rajbongshi.
Thompson also collected fourth place in Heat 2 of the Men’s 50m Breaststroke, recording a time of 32.78 seconds.
His 50-metre breaststroke heat was won by Pakistan’s Hamza Asif in 29.63 seconds.
National record holder and Olympian Aleka Persaud also finished in third place in her women’s 100-metre butterfly heat with a time of 1 minute 08.39 seconds.
Noelie Lacour was first, with Hayley Michelle Hoy in second place.
Persaud then claimed sixth place in her 50-metre butterfly event.
Delroy Tyrell had a tough men’s 50-metre freestyle heat as he stopped the clock at 24.76 seconds for fifth place; the race was won by Arvin Shaun.
He would go on to capture second place in his men’s 50-metre backstroke heat, but still missed out on qualification with a time of 27.61 seconds.
