KARPOWERSHIP has launched a new internship and trainee programme aimed at equipping young Guyanese with practical experience in the power generation industry while helping to build the skilled workforce needed to support the country’s expanding energy sector.
The initiative, announced on July 6, is designed to provide students and young professionals with first-hand exposure to modern power generation operations through structured learning and professional development opportunities.
According to the company, participants will take part in site visits, introductory sessions on power plant operations, safety awareness training and job-shadowing exercises alongside experienced engineering and operations professionals.
The programme is intended to complement academic studies by exposing participants to industry best practices, operational standards and the importance of maintaining safe and reliable electricity generation.
Speaking on behalf of Karpowership, Americas Regional Director of Commercial Operations, Beyza Özdemir, said developing local talent is critical to Guyana’s long-term economic growth.
“Karpowership believes that developing local talent is essential to supporting Guyana’s long-term growth,” Özdemir said. “Through this programme, we hope to inspire the next generation of engineers, technicians and energy professionals while providing meaningful exposure to one of the country’s most critical industries.”
The company explained that the internship has been structured primarily as an educational initiative, with participants focusing on observation, learning and professional development rather than undertaking operational duties.
Officials said the supervised environment is intended to provide meaningful industry exposure while ensuring participants gain a practical understanding of how modern power generation facilities operate.
The internship programme forms part of Karpowership’s wider community engagement and capacity-building efforts in Guyana, complementing its ongoing support for education, skills development and youth empowerment initiatives.
The company noted that as Guyana’s energy sector continues to expand, there will be increasing demand for qualified engineers, technicians and other skilled professionals to support electricity generation and related infrastructure.
Karpowership said it remains committed to working with local stakeholders to help develop the human capital needed to meet the country’s future energy requirements and sustain economic development.
Karpowership is the owner, operator and builder of the world’s largest fleet of floating power plants, known as Powerships. The company currently operates 45 Powerships with more than 8,500 megawatts of installed generating capacity, supplying electricity to 20 countries across four continents. In addition to power generation, the company also provides liquefied natural gas (LNG) procurement, storage and regasification services, while continuing to invest in renewable energy and land-based power generation projects.
