– community ground to be upgraded as Gov’t moves to address residents’ concerns

RESIDENTS of the Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme in Region Four are set to benefit from improved road connectivity, upgraded recreational facilities and enhanced public services as the Ministry of Housing – Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) advances a series of infrastructural projects aimed at strengthening one of the country’s newest housing developments.
Housing Minister Collin Croal announced the initiatives on Tuesday during a community engagement with residents, where he reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to addressing concerns raised by homeowners and improving the overall quality of life within the scheme.
Accompanying the minister were engineers from the Ministry’s Projects Department, Esan Barry and Kwesi Thompson, Surveyor Travis Fields, and officials from the Community Development, Enforcement and Compliance Departments.
The Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme comprises more than 450 completed two- and three-bedroom flat and elevated houses and is already equipped with concrete roads, a police outpost and other essential infrastructure.

The highlight of the visit was the announcement of a new road project that will significantly improve access to the housing development.
Currently, residents primarily use the “Red Road” to enter and exit the scheme. Under the new project, two major roads on the eastern and western sides of the development will be upgraded to reinforced concrete, providing a direct connection to the Aubrey Barker Highway south of the community.
The project will involve the construction of approximately 1,800 metres of reinforced concrete roadway, with each carriageway measuring 6.1 metres in width. Officials said the initiative is presently in the procurement phase, with the contract expected to be awarded within the next month.
“The residents are happy about this because it means persons will be able to get to and from the East Coast of Demerara and Georgetown very quickly,” Minister Croal said.
The improved road network is expected to ease traffic movement, enhance accessibility and support continued residential and commercial development within the rapidly expanding community.
In addition to transportation improvements, the minister provided an update on plans to transform the community’s recreational ground into a modern public space.
He explained that development of the facility is being undertaken in phases. The area has already been fenced, while the next stage will include the construction of concrete drains, filling and levelling of the ground, and installation of an entrance gate.
Further enhancements will include the installation of lighting, construction of bleachers and the creation of a designated children’s play area to provide recreational opportunities for families and young people.
Residents also raised several community concerns during the engagement, including street lighting, treated water supply, drainage, electricity, roaming livestock and security.
Minister Croal assured residents that the Ministry will work closely with the relevant agencies to address those issues. These include the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
He said the Ministry remains committed to maintaining regular engagement with residents after they occupy their homes to ensure communities continue to receive the infrastructure and services needed for sustainable development.
The initiatives form part of the Government’s broader housing development programme, which focuses not only on delivering homes and house lots but also on creating well-planned communities supported by modern infrastructure, improved connectivity and quality public amenities.
