JUST months after undergoing brain surgery and enduring extensive cancer treatment, young Revaldo Komal Singh of La Bagatelle, Leguan, Essequibo Islands, has achieved a remarkable milestone that is inspiring many across Guyana.
When the results of the 2026 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) were announced on Friday, one message stood out among the countless congratulatory notes. It came from Revaldo’s mother, Lalita Singh, bearing news that filled hearts with joy.
Against tremendous odds, the young man sat the examination and earned 380.15 marks, successfully passing all of his subjects with an overall pass rate of 78 per cent.
For many students, preparing for the NGSA is challenging enough. For Revaldo, however, the journey to the examination room was unlike any other.
His health struggles began in 2024, forcing him to miss an entire year of school after doctors advised that it was unsafe for him to attend classes. During that time, he underwent brain surgery, attended countless hospital appointments, completed 30 sessions of radiation therapy, and endured four cycles of chemotherapy.
Although he has made tremendous progress, Revaldo has not yet fully recovered and still has a small fraction of soft tissue remaining in his brain from the tumour.
The second of four children born to Lalita and Ricardo Singh, Revaldo never allowed his illness to extinguish his determination to learn.
After months of treatment, he returned to school last September. While he did not attend extra lessons, his teachers worked closely with him, and his mother spent countless hours helping him revise at home.
Speaking about her son’s accomplishment, an emotional Lalita said she could not hold back her tears when she saw his results.
“I am so proud of my child’s achievement despite all his challenges,” she said.
Reflecting on the difficult road her family has travelled, Lalita added, “I cried because, a year ago, I didn’t know if my baby would live to sit his exam.”
Despite the physical and emotional toll of his treatment, Revaldo never gave up. His determination to continue his education remained unwavering throughout his battle.
Those who have followed his story over the past two years have witnessed his transformation from a young patient fighting for his life into a resilient learner celebrating academic success.
Revaldo’s achievement is a testament to his courage, perseverance, and the incredible strength he displayed throughout one of the most difficult periods of his life.
As family, friends, teachers, and supporters celebrate this remarkable accomplishment, his story serves as a powerful reminder that setbacks do not have to define one’s future and that some of life’s greatest victories emerge from life’s toughest battles.
