THE Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has appointed Marco Bonofiglio as the new head coach of both the Senior Men’s and Under-20 national teams.

Bonofiglio returns to a familiar dugout, having previously served as assistant coach for both age groups and having made history during a previous stint as Under-17 boss by guiding Guyana to their highest-ever finish at the Concacaf U17 Championship.

He steps into the hot seat at a crucial juncture for the Golden Jaguars, who are currently preparing for the upcoming Concacaf Nations League campaigns.

Beyond his previous international experience with Guyana, Bonofiglio’s managerial CV includes domestic success in Canada, where he led League1 Ontario outfit Inter Toronto FC to a championship title.

His background also features coaching stints in Italy with Vigor Senigallia, alongside mentorship roles at Vis Pesaro and the Italy Under-19 national setup.

Tasked with a broad remit that includes widening the national player pool and overhauling technical standards, Bonofiglio expressed his pride at taking the reins.

“My objective is to build a team that reflects the pride, resilience and ambition of our country,” Bonofiglio said. “I want a team that is disciplined, aggressive, hungry for success, tactically intelligent and fully committed to competing at the highest level every time it steps onto the field.”

GFF President Wayne Forde backed the appointment, emphasising that Bonofiglio’s deep understanding of the local football culture makes him the right man to professionalise the national setup.

“Marco understands Guyanese football,” Forde said. “His appointment is not simply about preparing a team for competition; it is [also] about continuing to build a high-performance environment that develops players, strengthens our technical capacity, and positions Guyana to compete consistently at the highest levels of Concacaf.”
