— CXC says Guyana ‘leading’ education gains

GUYANA’S 2026 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) results showed improved performances across all four core subjects, with the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) crediting the country’s sustained education interventions and describing Guyana as a regional leader in improving student outcomes.

Presenting an overview of the results on Friday, CXC Director of Operations, Dr. Nicole Manning, said the steady year-on-year improvements demonstrate that the Ministry of Education’s interventions are delivering measurable results.

“This gradual improvement… is saying to you that whatever the interventions that you’re doing, you are having impact,” she said.

The highest standardised scores achieved in each subject for the 2026 examination. They were 122.917 in Mathematics, 121.653 in Social Studies, 120.031 in English, and 119.919 in Science.

English recorded the strongest performance, with 73.8 per cent of candidates scoring 50 per cent or more, up from 69.25 per cent in 2025. Social Studies, Science and Mathematics also registered improvements, while all four subjects recorded sharp increases in the number of candidates achieving full marks.

Mathematics, traditionally the most challenging subject, saw the percentage of candidates scoring 50 per cent or above rise from 55.51 per cent to 59.8 per cent, with perfect scores increasing from 472 to 627.

Dr. Manning said Guyana’s progress reflects the success of its education policies.

“We have seen… Guyana has really been leading on that and doing quite a bit of work there… Here we are seeing the fruits of the labour,” she said.

She added that the consistent gains across all subjects and both genders show that the country’s education strategies are yielding positive results, while congratulating students, teachers, parents and the Ministry of Education for the achievement.
