SOME 29 residents from the East Coast of Demerara have answered President Dr Irfaan Ali’s call to embrace technology-driven agriculture by establishing a state-of-the-art tunnel-house poultry project with support from the government.
The multi-million-dollar facility has the capacity to produce up to 45,000 chickens per batch, showcasing a modern, efficient, and sustainable approach to poultry production in Guyana.
The project was co-funded by the villagers, who contributed 10 per cent of the investment, while the remaining financing was secured through a commercial bank.
Developed with the direct support and guidance of President Ali, the initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to expand local food production, strengthen food security, create sustainable livelihoods, and generate new economic opportunities for communities across the country.
The group, operating under the Agri Invest initiative, said the President’s vision and support helped turn a simple conversation into a thriving agricultural venture that is creating jobs, generating income and building long-term wealth.
One of the entrepreneurs recalled that the idea was born after the President stopped to speak with them while they were exercising along the Georgetown Seawall and later invited them to breakfast to discuss opportunities.
The farm, located at Mora Point, has already completed two production cycles and is preparing to begin a third.
According to the group, the initiative is designed not only to strengthen Guyana’s poultry industry but also to create generational wealth for the young investors and their families.
Looking ahead, the entrepreneurs say they have ambitious plans to expand the operation into one of the region’s premier poultry companies, comparing their long-term vision to international industry giants.
They also expressed gratitude to President Ali for believing in their potential, saying his investment in young people has given them an opportunity to build a lasting legacy while contributing to Guyana’s growing agriculture sector. (NCN)
