– as thousands await secondary school placements
THOUSANDS of pupils and their families across Guyana are expected to learn their secondary school placements on Friday when the Ministry of Education officially releases the results of the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) 2026, marking one of the most significant milestones in the country’s education calendar.
The Ministry of Education has announced that the official release of the NGSA results will take place on Friday, July 10, at 11:00hrs at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, where education officials are expected to reveal the top-performing pupils, regional performances and national statistics.
The annual announcement signals the conclusion of months of preparation by thousands of Grade Six pupils who sat the examinations earlier this year and determines placement into secondary schools for the upcoming academic year.
Education officials are also expected to outline overall performance trends, subject analyses and improvements in student achievement, while recognising the country’s highest performers.
The NGSA remains the principal examination used to assess pupils at the end of their primary education and facilitates placement into public secondary schools across Guyana.
Placement is based on candidates’ performance, available spaces at schools and the choices submitted by parents or guardians.
Over the years, the Ministry of Education has implemented several reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes at the primary level.
These include expanded teacher training, curriculum enhancement, increased distribution of learning resources, strengthened literacy and numeracy programmes, the integration of digital learning tools and greater support for pupils in hinterland and riverain communities.
The government has also invested heavily in education infrastructure, constructing and rehabilitating schools, expanding smart classroom initiatives and increasing access to information and communications technology to create more equitable learning opportunities nationwide.
Education has remained a central pillar of the Government’s development agenda, with President Dr. Irfaan Ali consistently emphasising that investment in human capital is essential to Guyana’s long-term economic transformation. The administration has significantly increased education spending in recent years while introducing initiatives aimed at improving access to quality education from nursery through tertiary levels.
In addition to infrastructure development, the Government has expanded programmes such as the Because We Care cash grant, school uniform and transportation assistance, textbook distribution and school feeding initiatives to reduce barriers to education and improve student participation and performance.
The annual release of the NGSA results is widely regarded as one of the most anticipated events on the national education calendar, as it not only recognises academic excellence but also marks the beginning of a new chapter for thousands of young Guyanese transitioning from primary to secondary education.
Parents, teachers and pupils are expected to gather at schools and follow the official announcement as the Ministry unveils the results and celebrates the achievements of the nation’s Grade Six pupils.
