Guyana Independence Celebrations Committee stages softball, cultural show

THE Guyana Independence Celebrations Committee, under the patronage of the Consulate General of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Toronto, Canada, will wrap up Guyana’s 60th Independence anniversary celebrations on Saturday with the annual softball tournament, a fashion show and a grand cultural show.
Eight teams are ready to battle for supremacy in the softball – four in the round-arm version and four in straight-arm at Littles Park, Scarborough with the action slated to get underway at 11:30 am, following the 11:15 am opening ceremony.
The teams in contention in round-arm are Cambridge Jaguars, Panthers, Expendables and G.H Reno while the Ontario Softball Cricket League (OSCL), Bacchus Ruff Ryders, Caribbean Sensation and Ambassadors Killer Bees will battle in the straight arm competition.
The fashion show, which will be held in the adjoining Malvern Resource Centre, is billed to get underway at 13:30 hrs and this will be followed by a cultural show at 14:00 hrs featuring several prominent Guyanese artistes.
The day’s activities climax with the cricket finals presentation at 19:00 hrs.
The committee is urging Canadian-based Guyanese to come out in their numbers to support the day’s activities which will also see several vendors selling local delicacies.
Meanwhile, the committee has planned a launch for Friday at Windies Restaurant & Bar in Scarborough, starting at 18:30 hrs.
