FISHERFOLK from across the Essequibo Coast gathered at Charity on Friday to celebrate National Fisherfolk Day 2026, where Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Guyana’s fishing industry through continued investments, modernisation and support for those whose livelihoods depend on the sea.

The observance was held under the theme, “Celebrating and Empowering Fishers’ Contribution to Food Safety and Security,” bringing together fisherfolk, industry stakeholders, and residents to recognise the vital role the sub-sector plays in ensuring national food security, while supporting thousands of families across the country.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Mustapha praised the dedication and resilience of Guyana’s fisherfolk, noting that their hard work remains a cornerstone of the country’s agricultural sector and a significant contributor to economic growth.

He highlighted Region Two’s importance to the fishing industry, revealing that approximately 246 fishing vessels and around 1,050 fisherfolk operate daily from the region’s various landing sites, making it one of the country’s active fishing hubs.

“The fisheries sector continues to play a critical role in feeding our nation, while creating employment and generating incomes for many families. Our fisherfolk work tirelessly, often under difficult conditions, to ensure fresh seafood reaches homes and markets across Guyana,” the minister said.

Minister Mustapha also outlined a series of initiatives undertaken by the government since 2020 to transform and modernise the fisheries sub-sector.

He disclosed that more than 14,500 fisherfolk across Guyana have benefitted from over G$2.189 billion in direct cash assistance, providing financial relief and helping to strengthen livelihoods.

Beyond financial support, the government has invested heavily in expanding cage aquaculture, upgrading landing sites, wharves, and cold-storage facilities, and improving safety through the introduction of vessel-monitoring systems.

The minister said measures have also been implemented to reduce operational costs by removing taxes and duties on essential fishing equipment and inputs, making it easier for fisherfolk to sustain and expand their operations.

Additionally, the sub-sector is being modernised through the establishment of digital registries for fisherfolk and fishing vessels, improving efficiency and allowing for better planning and management of the industry.

Minister Mustapha emphasised that these investments reflect the government’s long-term vision of building a sustainable, competitive, and resilient fisheries sub-sector capable of meeting both domestic demand and export opportunities.

He assured fisherfolk that the government will continue working closely with stakeholders to address challenges, improve infrastructure, and create greater opportunities for growth.

The National Fisherfolk Day celebration also served as an opportunity to honour the dedication, sacrifices, and contributions of Guyana’s fisherfolk, whose efforts continue to play an essential role in safeguarding the country’s food security and supporting coastal communities.

The minister encouraged those in the industry to continue embracing innovation and sustainable fishing practices as Guyana works towards further developing its blue economy and ensuring the fisheries sector remains a key pillar of national development.

Attending was Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture Vikash Ramkisson and Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture Dhaneshwar Deonarine, amongst others.
