THE long-awaited Anna Regina National Stadium was officially commissioned on Friday evening by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, marking a historic milestone for sports development and economic growth in Region Two.

Despite persistent rainfall, thousands gathered for the grand opening, which featured an exciting T20 exhibition match between the Shivnarine Chanderpaul XI and Brian Lara XI, along with a T10 clash between the Essequibo XI and a combined Demerara/Berbice XI.

Declaring the stadium officially open, President Ali said the occasion represented far more than the unveiling of a sporting facility.

“This is not just the opening of a stadium; it is the beginning of something new. It is an investment in infrastructure that will transform the tourism ecosystem and create opportunities for the people of Region Two,” the President stated.

Welcoming West Indies cricket legend Brian Charles Lara to the historic event, President Ali noted that the stadium boasts one of the fastest-draining cricket grounds in the world, allowing activities to continue despite heavy rainfall.

He announced that the venue is expected to host international cricket, including International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s World Cup matches and Caribbean Premier League (CPL) fixtures, giving Essequibians the opportunity to witness top-level cricket without leaving the region.

The President said the stadium’s floodlights meet ICC standards, and stressed that the facility would be accessible to all citizens, particularly young people seeking to develop their sporting talents.

“This investment, which many doubted would become a reality, is now complete. Essequibo is taking its rightful place on the sporting map,” he declared.

President Ali also highlighted the broader transformation taking place across Region Two, revealing that designs have been completed for a new four-lane highway, and reaffirming Government’s commitment to diversifying the regional economy. He added that Guyanese will also benefit from an estimated 50 per cent reduction in electricity costs with the country’s energy transformation.

He assured residents that despite its geographical location, Region Two will continue to rise in every sector, and many opportunities will be available to the young people.

President Ali thanked citizens for their continued support, and pledged that his administration would remain committed to serving all Guyanese.

Meanwhile, Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs described the stadium as an important investment that will allow Region Two to host international sporting events, while stimulating economic activity through sports tourism.

He said the project reflects the government’s commitment to expanding opportunities for athletes and communities throughout the region.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. said the commissioning was a proud moment for the people of Essequibo.

He praised President Ali, Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, Cabinet, and all those involved in delivering the project.

Minister Ramson also commended the rapid restoration of the facility following the recent storm, noting that the damaged roof was replaced within days.

“No storm and no challenge will ever stop the Guyanese people. This stadium is just a symbol of what we can do as a people,” Ramson said.

Residents described the stadium as a massive investment.

“We are really proud and happy for this, and we are glad our region was chosen” Manta Narine said.
