DAYS after a powerful windstorm swept across the Essequibo Coast damaging a number of houses, businesses and sections of the newly completed Anna Regina Stadium, a renewed sense of optimism has emerged as residents eagerly await the facility’s historic commissioning.

From hotel operators and vendors to sports enthusiasts and young cricketers, anticipation is sweeping across Region Two as thousands of Guyanese are expected to converge at the location today for what is being described as a landmark moment in the region’s history.

Regional Chairman, Devin Mohan

Regional Chairman Devin Mohan in an exclusive interview told this publication that the region has made an impressive recovery following the freak storm that struck on June 24.

Although the storm ripped off the roof of the stadium’s Blue Stand, he disclosed that repairs have been completed and the venue is fully prepared to welcome patrons for its grand opening.

“I am pleased to report that the stadium is ready for Friday,” Mohan said adding, “The people of Essequibo are eagerly awaiting the arrival of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to officially commission this state-of-the-art facility.”

He noted that the swift response by the Government of Guyana, led by President Ali, helped restore confidence among residents after the storm, with damaged public and private infrastructure repaired in a relatively short period.

According to Mohan, excitement is not only centred on the commissioning ceremony but also on the star-studded cricket match featuring West Indies legends Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brian Lara, alongside Guyanese international player Gudakesh Motie and other prominent players.

“I have received calls from Guyanese in several regions who have told me they will be travelling to Essequibo for the occasion,” Mohan said. “We are anticipating thousands of people from across Guyana this weekend.”

Beyond the celebrations, the regional chairman believes the stadium will become a catalyst for economic growth throughout Region Two.

He explained that hotels, Airbnb operators, resorts, lake attractions, market vendors, taxi operators, restaurants and other small businesses are expected to experience increased business as visitors flock to the region.

“Region Two has been one of the fastest-growing regions in Guyana across many sectors, and we are proud and grateful for that,” he said. “The Anna Regina Stadium is one of the region’s landmark developments.”

Mohan added that the facility will create new opportunities for young athletes, encourage sports development and position Essequibo as a destination for major sporting events and sports tourism.

“This stadium belongs to the people of Region Two,” he said. “It will empower our young people, inspire future generations and provide tremendous opportunities for our business community and the ordinary men and women of Essequibo,” the regional chairman added.

Mohan said that the region is ready to welcome thousands for the commissioning as the celebration reflects resilience, progress and a new chapter for the Cinderella County.
