POPULAR Guyanese recording artiste, Emmanuel James, better known by his stage name ‘Lil’ Saint’, has died, prompting an outpouring of grief from the local entertainment fraternity, fans and government officials.

The versatile Dancehall, Soca and Afrobeat performer built a dedicated following through viral freestyles and crowd-favourite tracks like “Scrape Head” (featuring Azariel), as well as viral commentaries on local social dynamics, such as his notable release “Pakoo”.

Lil’ Saint had recently undergone surgery after doctors discovered masses in his pancreas. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport described the entertainer as a young and promising artiste whose talent had already begun making a significant impact on Guyana’s music industry.

“The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport extends its deepest condolences on the passing of young and promising dancehall artiste, Lil’ Saint,” the ministry said.

It noted that in 2025, Lil’ Saint competed in the Ministry’s Dancehall Monarch Competition, where he secured second place and was also named Best Newcomer.

The ministry said the accolades reflected his exceptional talent and bright future within Guyana’s entertainment industry.

“Lil’ Saint was an emerging force in the local entertainment landscape, recognised for his versatility across the Dancehall and Soca genres. His passion, creativity and dedication left a lasting impression on audiences and fellow musicians alike,” the statement added.

The ministry joined his family, friends, fans and the wider creative community in mourning his passing, honouring his contribution to Guyana’s cultural landscape and extending heartfelt sympathies to all who knew him.

Before his death, Lil’ Saint recorded an emotional Facebook Live broadcast in which he candidly spoke about battling serious health complications for the past four years, which he believed stemmed from excessive alcohol consumption.

Speaking directly to his supporters, the artiste revealed that he had endured persistent abdominal pain and frequent vomiting and had sought treatment at several public health institutions, including hospitals in Linden and Georgetown.

He said doctors eventually diagnosed a condition affecting his pancreas and advised that he undergo major surgery.

Although he admitted feeling terrified by the operation and postponing it twice, Lil’ Saint told viewers he had finally found the strength to proceed.

During the livestream, he also expressed heartfelt gratitude to his wife, whom he credited with standing by him throughout his illness.

“I really love my wife… She stood up for me when I didn’t believe in myself. She made me believe in myself.  She encouraged me to do the right thing and never gave up on me when I was extremely down,” he said.

Since news of his death emerged, that final public message has resonated deeply with fans across social media, where thousands have shared tributes celebrating not only his music but also his honesty, vulnerability and determination throughout his health battle.
