HEAVY rainfall and strong winds have caused significant damage to several schools across Guyana, with two educational institutions in Region Two sustaining extensive structural damage and a teacher injured during the severe weather, the Ministry of Education has reported.

In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry said the adverse weather conditions have particularly affected the Anna Regina Multilateral School and Rivers Town Primary School in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region, where assessments revealed substantial damage to school infrastructure.

The ministry also confirmed that a teacher at Rivers Town Primary School was injured during the incident and is currently receiving medical attention.

“The Ministry is deeply concerned to have received reports of an injury sustained by a teacher at Rivers Town Primary,” the statement noted. “Our thoughts are with the teacher for a swift recovery.”

Officials said the ministry is maintaining close contact with the regional administration as efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage and coordinate emergency response measures.

Countrywide assessments have also been launched to determine whether other educational institutions were affected by the severe weather system, which brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to parts of the country.

According to the ministry, once the initial evaluations are completed, it will work with the relevant Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) and municipalities to ensure that damaged facilities are repaired as quickly as possible.

The ministry emphasised that restoring affected schools remains a priority in order to minimise disruptions to students and staff and ensure that educational activities can continue safely.

Meanwhile, authorities are urging residents in affected areas to exercise caution and prioritise their safety while adverse weather conditions persist.

Citizens have been advised to remain indoors where possible and to follow guidance issued by local authorities and emergency response agencies.

The latest weather-related damage comes as parts of the country continue to experience periods of intense rainfall and gusty conditions, raising concerns about the vulnerability of public infrastructure and the potential impact on communities.
