THE Guyana Police Force’s Traffic Department is reminding motorists that under the amended Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, persons who commit speeding violations can be notified electronically and are responsible for ensuring they are aware of any tickets issued against their vehicles.
In a public advisory, the Traffic Department said that motorists identified through the country’s automated speed enforcement system may receive notifications via SMS text message, email, and registered mail. The force noted that these measures were introduced under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, as amended by Act No. 12 of 2024.
Police explained that vehicle owners can also independently verify whether they have outstanding speeding tickets by using the online services available through the Guyana Police Force’s website. By entering a vehicle registration number or Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), motorists can access information relating to speeding violations recorded against their vehicles.
Additionally, the Traffic Department said that a monthly list of motorists with outstanding speeding tickets is published to further inform vehicle owners of unresolved violations.
“It is your duty to be aware, as the consequences of your own action are not transferable,” the department stated, emphasising that motorists bear responsibility for monitoring and addressing any penalties issued under the system.
The advisory comes as authorities continue to strengthen the country’s automated traffic enforcement programme, which was introduced as part of broader efforts to improve road safety and reduce speeding-related accidents.
The automated speed ticketing system, which became operational in 2025, uses overhead traffic cameras to detect speeding violations and other traffic offences. The cameras capture vehicle information, including registration numbers, allowing tickets to be generated electronically and issued to registered vehicle owners.
Police have previously indicated that notifications may be delivered through multiple channels, including SMS, email and registered post, while payments can be made electronically. Authorities have also encouraged vehicle owners to ensure that their contact information with the Guyana Revenue Authority remains current to facilitate timely notification of violations.
The introduction of electronic ticketing forms part of the government’s Safe Road Intelligent System initiative, which seeks to leverage technology to improve compliance with traffic laws and enhance road safety nationwide. The move aligns Guyana with a growing number of countries that use camera-based enforcement systems to detect speeding and other traffic violations.
Road safety advocates have long identified excessive speed as one of the leading contributors to serious traffic collisions and fatalities. Authorities have argued that automated enforcement provides a more consistent method of monitoring compliance while reducing opportunities for motorists to evade penalties.
Under traffic laws, speeding remains one of several offences that can attract penalties and demerit points, underscoring the importance of adherence to established speed limits.
The Traffic Department is urging all motorists to regularly check their status online and promptly address any outstanding tickets to avoid additional legal or administrative consequences.
