REGION TWO is undergoing a remarkable transformation as strategic government investments continue to improve infrastructure, attract private investment, and strengthen the region’s tourism sector.

Regional Chairman, Devin Mohan

The region’s development momentum has been bolstered by several key projects, including the soon-to-be-commissioned Anna Regina Stadium, the upgrading of the Mainstay Airstrip, and the introduction of a new ferry service, which is already enhancing transportation and connectivity between communities.
These investments have significantly improved access to the Essequibo Coast, making travel easier for residents, investors and visitors alike. As a result, confidence in the region’s economic potential has grown, encouraging increased private sector participation.
Along the coast and within Amerindian villages, new businesses are emerging at an unprecedented rate.
During an exclusive interview with the Guyana Chronicle, Regional Chairman Devin Mohan said hotels, cafés, restaurants and other commercial enterprises are being established to meet the growing demand generated by increased visitor arrivals and expanding economic activity.

Just a few years ago, Region Two was widely recognised for its natural attractions, including its scenic lakes, rich fishing opportunities and ecotourism experiences along the Pomeroon River. However, despite its tourism potential, accommodation options were limited, dining facilities were basic, and there was little to no structured café culture or fine-dining experience available to visitors.
Today, that landscape is rapidly changing. Entrepreneurs and investors are capitalising on the improved infrastructure and growing tourism market, creating modern facilities that offer enhanced services and experiences for both local and international visitors.
The Ministry of Tourism estimates that nearly 100 new hotel rooms will soon become available across the region, representing a significant expansion of its hospitality capacity.

According to Mohan, the growth is expected to support major sporting, cultural and tourism events while creating employment opportunities for residents.
“The developments are also bringing new opportunities to hinterland and riverine communities, with increased economic activity extending beyond traditional business centres and into Amerindian villages and tourism destinations throughout the region,” Mohan said.
He noted that as the government continues to invest in critical infrastructure and connectivity, Region Two is steadily positioning itself as one of Guyana’s emerging hubs for tourism, business and sustainable economic growth.
With enhanced transportation networks, expanding hospitality services and growing investor confidence, the future of the Essequibo Coast appears brighter than ever, reinforcing its status as a destination of choice for visitors and investors seeking new opportunities in Guyana.
