Man charged after allegedly trying to take blame in Cuban national murder probe

A 36-year-old Albouystown labourer has been released on $175,000 bail for attempting to obstruct the course of justice after allegedly falsely implicating himself in the murder of a Cuban national.

Junior Callender of Hogg Street, Albouystown, appeared before Magistrate Orintha Schmidt at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where the charge was read to him.

Police allege that Callender attempted to obstruct the course of justice during investigations into the murder of Cuban national, Daintier Vegas Infante, who was fatally shot on May 10 at Forshaw Street, Alberttown.

Investigators contend that Callender falsely implicated himself in the matter in an effort to take responsibility for a wanted person connected to the murder probe.

He was arrested on June 18 and charged the following day with Attempt to Obstruct the Course of Justice, contrary to Section 330 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act.

Callender was not required to plead and was granted $175,000 bail. He was also ordered to report to the police every Friday at 09:00 hrs. The matter was adjourned to July 3.

The charge stems from the ongoing investigation into the murder of Infante, who was shot and killed at his workplace in Alberttown.

Police had since issued wanted bulletins for Nicholas Daby, Mikhail Joseph and Baraka Garnett in connection with the killing.

According to investigators, the Cuban national approached one of the men after they entered the area and were seen speaking with another individual. He was subsequently shot and later succumbed to his injuries.

The suspects reportedly fled the scene in a car, which was later intercepted by police. A woman was arrested and questioned as investigators sought to determine the whereabouts of the suspects.

The murder investigation remains active.
