RESIDENTS of Capoey Village in Region Two are set to benefit from enhanced childcare services and caregiver training opportunities following a visit by Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud, on Saturday.
During her outreach to the community, Minister Persaud met and engaged with the Toshao and Councillors of the Capoey Village Council, where discussions focused on community development, social support services and initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of families and children within the village.
A key outcome of the engagement was the Ministry’s commitment to support the newly constructed daycare facility in Capoey through its National Care Economy Initiative.
The daycare centre, which was built by the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, will receive assistance from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security to ensure it is fully furnished and equipped to serve the village’s young children.

The initiative is expected to provide a safe, nurturing and child-friendly environment where children can learn, grow, and develop during their formative years. The investment forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen care services across communities while creating opportunities for economic empowerment.
In addition to furnishing the facility, the Ministry will also support the training of caregivers through the Women’s Innovation and Investment Network (WIIN) Programme. Through this programme, residents will have the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality early childhood care and education, helping to build local capacity and create employment opportunities within the community.
Village leaders welcomed the support and expressed gratitude for the government’s continued investment in the development of hinterland and Indigenous communities. One village leader noted that the initiative will greatly benefit parents, guardians and children by ensuring access to quality childcare services while empowering residents through specialised training.
Minister Persaud emphasised the importance of strengthening the care economy and ensuring that communities have access to the resources needed to support families and foster child development. She highlighted that the National Care Economy Initiative seeks not only to improve childcare infrastructure but also to equip individuals with practical skills that can contribute to sustainable livelihoods.
Regional Democratic Council Councillor, Melrose Henry, commended the Government and the Ministry for such an initiative. Henry said that it will be a boost for the community.
Toshao of the village, Wendy Francis, said that it is something that the community want and commended Dr Vindhya Persaud for choosing the community.
The visit formed part of the Minister’s ongoing outreach across Region Two, where she continues to engage directly with residents, community leaders, and stakeholders to identify needs and deliver services that improve the quality of life for citizens.
With the combined support for infrastructure, training, and community development, Capoey Village is poised to benefit from a stronger childcare system that will positively impact children, families, and the wider community for years to come
