AT a lavish ceremony, replete with pomp and splendour at the Gemini Lounge, the City of New York recently honoured US-based Guyanese pugilist Elton Dharry for becoming a World Champion.
The 40-year-old Dharry, who fights out of the Gleason Boxing Gym in Brooklyn, on April 29, 2026, beat Tanzania’s 22-year-old Salim Kassim by a unanimous decision to win the IBO Super Bantamweight belt at the Pegasus Suites.
Dharry, who born on the island of Leguan on the Essequibo River, became the eighth Guyanese Boxer to win a World Title and first male to achieve that feat on home soil.
At the ceremony, which was attended by his wife, family and supporters, Dharry received a NYS proclamation from Jenifer Rajkumar’s Office, member of Assembly, 38th District, A proclamation from senator Joseph Addabbo, 15th senate district, and A city council citation from members of the City of New York by Lynn Schulman.
The stylish boxer, who has a professional record of 33 bouts, 26 wins,15 KOs, six losses and a draw, said he was also deeply honoured to have received these recognitions.
“I am truly humbled and honoured to have celebrated with the US-Guyanese Diaspora. I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who came out to share in this meaningful occasion.
Your presence was greatly appreciated,” said Dharry, who migrated to New York with his family as a 13-year-old.
“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Nalini Brandon Alli from Hacks Halal, Nals Nest and Gemini Lounge for graciously hosting such a memorable event in my honour. Your generosity and thoughtfulness are deeply appreciated,” concluded Dharry, who also thanked the Government of Guyana and the Ministry of Sport for their continued support.
