THE Guyana National Control Centre (GNCC), a key component of the Gas-to-Energy Project, is expected to become fully operational by August 2026, significantly enhancing the management and reliability of Guyana’s electricity network.
This was disclosed by Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar following a site visit on Tuesday to inspect ongoing works at the state-of-the-art facility at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara.
According to the minister, the facility is currently undergoing comprehensive testing of its critical systems, including power supply, internal generators, security, water and air conditioning infrastructure.
GPL officials informed the minister that the centre’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment has already arrived in Guyana and is undergoing acceptance testing at the company’s secondary control centre in Sophia.
“The SCADA equipment will enable GPL to monitor, control, and optimise electricity distribution across the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS), thereby significantly strengthening real-time management and improving overall system reliability,” Indar noted in a Facebook post.
The Guyana National Control Centre (GNCC) costs approximately US $18.65 million (approx. GY$3.9 billion). This total cost covers both the civil engineering of the physical building (which had an initial contract around US $8.6 million).
The facility is being constructed by Power China International, will serve as the central hub for monitoring and managing Guyana’s electricity grid. Once operational, it is expected to improve grid stability, reduce blackouts and support the integration of power from the Gas-to-Energy Project into the national system.
Government signed the contract for the establishment of the National Control Centre in 2024 as part of broader efforts to modernise Guyana’s electricity infrastructure and strengthen energy security.
