THE Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development on Monday held its 20th weekly departmental meeting, bringing together senior officials to review ongoing programmes, assess emerging priorities and strengthen coordination across key areas of work.
The meeting was chaired by Minister Priya Manickchand and included heads of departments and senior technical staff responsible for delivering services across the country’s local government system.
According to the Ministry, the discussions focused on a wide range of initiatives aimed at improving community infrastructure and enhancing the delivery of local services, with particular emphasis on the management and upgrading of markets and recreational spaces nationwide.
Officials reviewed ongoing efforts to modernise municipal and neighbourhood markets, improve operational efficiency and promote increased economic activity within these key commercial hubs. Attention was also given to the maintenance and enhancement of recreational areas to ensure they remain safe, accessible and beneficial to residents.
The Ministry noted that these spaces play an important role in supporting community life, facilitating small business activity and providing social and recreational opportunities for citizens across urban and rural areas.
The meeting also examined opportunities for expanded partnerships with international and local organisations, including discussions on potential collaboration with The King’s Foundation. These partnerships are expected to support capacity building, community development initiatives and broader efforts to strengthen local governance systems.
Officials underscored that such collaborations could provide technical expertise, training and development support as the Ministry continues to advance its programme of modernising local government structures and services.
The Ministry stated that its weekly departmental meetings serve as a key mechanism for monitoring progress, addressing operational challenges and ensuring coordinated implementation of policies and programmes across all divisions.
Through these regular engagements, the Ministry aims to improve accountability, strengthen inter-departmental communication and ensure that development initiatives are effectively aligned with national goals for community development and improved public service delivery.
As Guyana continues to experience rapid growth and urban expansion, the Ministry said its focus remains on building stronger, more efficient local governance systems capable of meeting the evolving needs of communities throughout the country.
