A NEW chapter in Guyana’s cultural landscape was marked on Monday evening as the Euro-Guyanese Classical Music and Opera Association staged its inaugural concert, bringing internationally acclaimed opera and classical performance to the historic St. George’s Cathedral in Georgetown.
The debut event, held on June 8 under the patronage of European Union Ambassador to Guyana Luca Pierantoni, featured a high-profile lineup of performers led by renowned Argentine-Spanish baritone Leonardo López Linares and celebrated oboist Cecilia Maragno. The evening was described as a showcase of world-class musical artistry, blending international soloists with Guyanese and regional performers in a collaborative cultural presentation.
Audiences at St. George’s Cathedral were treated to a programme that highlighted both operatic and instrumental excellence, supported by performers from the newly formed association, including Chie Clarke, Maria Rodriguez, Marilyn Dewar, Syesha Yahya, and the Woodside Choir.
The association itself is an initiative spearheaded by Ambassador Pierantoni and brings together a network of local and regional music institutions aimed at strengthening classical music education and performance in Guyana. Member organisations include the Clemsville Music Conservatory, Dewar’s Music School, Guyana Music Teachers Association, Mitchell’s Mount Academy, and the Symphonic Orchestra of Jesus.
López Linares, the evening’s featured baritone, brought international acclaim and vocal depth to the stage. Born in Buenos Aires into a musical family, he was raised in a theatrical environment that shaped his career from an early age. His professional breakthrough came in 1995 when he won First Prize at the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition in Philadelphia, a milestone that led to collaborations with legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti, including a performance in La Bohème.
Organisers described the event as the first of many planned initiatives under the association, aimed at expanding access to classical music, fostering cultural exchange, and nurturing local talent through international collaboration.
The successful staging at St. George’s Cathedral signals what organisers say is the beginning of a sustained effort to position Guyana as a growing hub for classical music and operatic performance in the region.
