A MOBILE e-ID enrollment exercise was conducted at the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) last week, allowing staff members to register for the country’s Electronic Identification (e-ID) cards.
Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, Zulfikar Ally, visited the bank, where he engaged employees and observed the enrollment process, which was designed to provide convenient access to digital identification services in the workplace.
Also participating in the exercise was GBTI Chief Executive Officer, Shawn Gurchurran, who completed his e-ID registration, demonstrating the bank’s support for the government’s digital transformation agenda.
Speaking about his experience, Gurchurran said the registration process was simple and straightforward, while commending the professionalism of the staff conducting the exercise.
“But in the larger picture, I think the e-ID is a wonderful initiative and the banks, not just GBTI, have embraced it as part of our onboarding process. It will reduce the time we need to onboard our customers and help make the process more seamless. We can deliver a better service, we’re more comfortable, and I’d encourage everyone to get registered and obtain their own e-ID,” Gurchurran said.
As of May, more than 21,000 Guyanese had enrolled for the e-ID programme, with approximately 75 per cent of the cards already issued.
The digital identification system is designed to improve access to government and private-sector services by allowing citizens and eligible residents to use a single, secure identification document to access information and complete transactions more efficiently.
At this stage, the e-ID card is not intended to replace existing forms of identification such as passports, driver’s licences or the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) identification card.
Since the Digital Identity Card Act came into effect on March 31, 2026, the government has expanded enrollment operations across several regions through the establishment of permanent registration offices and mobile outreach teams.
Citizens applying for the digital ID card are required to provide proof of citizenship, a photo identification document and proof of address.
Supporting documents may include a birth certificate, passport, national identification card, driver’s licence, utility bill or Tax Identification Number (TIN) certificate.
