GUYANA’S aggressive nationwide sports infrastructure drive is about to realise its next major milestone.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali is expected to officially commission the new Anna Regina National Stadium on Friday, July 3, marking a massive upgrade for cricket and multi-sport infrastructure in Region Two.
The announcement was confirmed on Saturday by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., who indicated that the state-of-the-art facility is entirely ready, barring some final, very minor adjustments.
The crown jewel of the new stadium is its playing surface. Minister Ramson noted that the facility will be a genuine “game changer” for the region, specifically highlighting that the outfield’s advanced construction is comparable to the superior, fast-drying drainage systems utilised at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.
Designed primarily as a top-tier cricket venue, the stadium features an expansive modern players’ pavilion and upgraded team changing rooms.
It also includes expanded spectator seating and modernised sanitary facilities to accommodate large crowds.
The commissioning of Anna Regina marks the second major stadium opening for Guyana this year, following the launch of the Bayroc National Stadium in Linden.
It is part of a broader five-stadium pipeline funded by the government to decentralise high-level sports infrastructure beyond the capital city.
According to the Ministry, the sports construction boom will continue at a rapid pace through the rest of the year.
Next on the docket to be opened are the Mackenzie Stadium, the New Amsterdam Track and Field Facility, and the highly anticipated Palmyra Stadium—all of which are scheduled for completion and official commissioning before the end of 2026.
