NIGHT two of the Enet National Squash Championship continued on Thursday at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue, with several riveting matches as the Elite players showcased their skill sets.
Watched by another pleasing turn out, Elite players Larissa Wiltshire, Regan Pollard, Abosaide Cadogan, Akeila Wiltshire, Louis Da Silva, Emily Fung-A-Fat, Ashley Khalil, Nicholas Verwey, Kirsten Gomes, Jason-Ray Khalil, and Jason-Ray Khalil were all in Winner’s row.
In one of the most exciting matches on the night, Lester Lewis beat Egan Bulkan in the Men’s Open in an energy-sapping encounter that lasted five games.
The taller Lewis, who had lost to Nicholas Verwey earlier in the evening, rebounded from a first game loss to take the second game 11-6.
Lewis and Bulkan engaged in very long rallies and powerfully executed drives during the fast-paced game.
Lewis displayed excellent speed and use of the court to counter good lobs from back of the Court from Bulkan who had Lewis scrambling forward to retrieve well-placed drop shots, inches above the tin.
After losing 11-6, 11-6 in the second and third games, Bulhan found renewed energy to take an early lead with some good volleys which caught Lewis off-guard to the delight of a group of raucous supporters who had gathered just outside of the glass of Court Three.
The 2-all scoreline set up the decider which had all the ingredients to create an electric atmosphere.
Both players, dripping with sweat, shrugged off exhaustion in a game highlighted by long rallies and which had the fans on their feet although there were two other matches being played at the same time on Courts Four and Five.
Neither lad would quit as the final game went to two match points and when the last game ended at 12-10, there was a standing ovation for both players as Lewis would win 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 7-11, 12-10.
In Women’s National Draw in Elite category, number two ranked Ashley Khalil easily disposed of Safirah Sumner 11-1, 11-3, 11-0 while Abosaide Cadogan got the better of Lydia Fraser 11-6, 11-3, 11-6 and Akeila Wiltshire defeated Paige Mendonca 11-6, 11-4, 11-1.
The only upset of the night was probably when Jason van Dijk lost to Joshua Verwey 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9 in a gruelling Men’s Open match that went to five games
Alex Arjoon and number 1 ranked Mary Fun-a-Fat drew byes and were expected to go into action last night.
