HARVESTING is now underway at the 10-acre pineapple farm in Mashabo, marking a significant milestone in the village’s efforts to diversify agricultural production and create sustainable economic opportunities for residents.
The project, which was established approximately two years ago, is now yielding its first large-scale harvest. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community development through agriculture and reflects the government’s commitment to supporting farmers and expanding food production through investments by the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).
According to Deputy Toshao of Mashabo, Ms. Younita Williams, 10 acres were cultivated with support that included pathway workers, CSO, CIIP and land preparation. After two years of growth and careful management, the pineapple plants are now producing a substantial harvest.
Ms. Williams explained that the project is designed not only to boost agricultural production but also to generate revenue for the village. Proceeds from the sale of the pineapples are deposited into the Village Council’s account and reinvested into community development projects and village management initiatives.
“The revenue goes back into the Village Council and is used for the continued development of the community,” she said.
Fresh pineapples from the farm are currently being sold at $500 each, with harvesting activities continuing as workers gather the mature fruits from the fields.
She extended gratitude to the Ministry of Agriculture for offering planting materials and technical assistance for the cultivation of the pineapples. She said it is a project that the community is proud of.
“Projects like this help our community to develop and we are happy for such,” Williams said.
The successful harvest demonstrates how community-based agricultural projects can create income, support local development, and contribute to economic growth. As production continues, the Mashabo pineapple farm is expected to provide lasting benefits for residents while strengthening the village’s agricultural sector.
