A 24-year-old mason accused of killing his mother at their Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara home, has been remanded to prison after appearing before the court on a murder charge.

Greedesh Ramkissoon of Lot 80 Cornelia Ida, Block ‘Y’, appeared on Wednesday before Magistrate Rabindra Singh, at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with the murder of his mother, 55-year-old Surujdai Kahrui, a supervisor. The charge was instituted contrary to common law.

Ramkissoon was not required to enter a plea to the indictable offence and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to August 7, 2026.

Police said the accused was arrested on May 29, one day after the alleged murder occurred at the family’s residence in Cornelia Ida. The woman was found dead on the evening of May 28, prompting a police investigation that led to the arrest of her son.

Initial reports indicated that Kahrui, also known as “Sharda”, lived with her two sons. Investigators said one of the sons returned home and discovered his mother motionless inside the house. The other son, Ramkissoon, was reportedly seen at the residence before the discovery and was subsequently taken into police custody.

Police ranks who processed the scene reportedly observed marks of violence on the woman’s body. Her remains were later taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination was conducted as part of the investigation. Authorities also reviewed CCTV footage from the area as they sought to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.

The matter is expected to continue before the courts as police and prosecutors prepare the case for preliminary proceedings.
