GUYANA and the United States have reaffirmed their strong bilateral partnership following a series of high-level meetings in Washington, D.C., where senior officials discussed co-operation in energy, security, diplomacy and economic development, while the United States reiterated its support for Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Hugh Todd, and Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud led the Guyanese delegation during engagements held on June 1 and 2 with senior officials of the United States Government.
The discussions included meetings with Chris Wright, Acting Assistant Secretary of War for Homeland Defense and Hemispheric Affairs Joseph Humire, and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
According to officials, the talks focused on a range of issues of mutual interest, including energy security, border security co-operation, regional stability, irregular migration and efforts to combat illicit trafficking.
A key outcome of the engagements was the reaffirmation by the United States of its continued support for Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, an issue that remains of strategic importance as Guyana continues to advance its national development agenda and strengthen regional partnerships.
The meetings also examined opportunities to deepen co-operation in the energy sector, where Guyana has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing oil-producing nations. Discussions on energy security were aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two countries as Guyana continues to expand its role in global energy markets while pursuing broader economic diversification.
Security co-operation also featured prominently on the agenda, with both sides discussing mechanisms to enhance border security, address transnational crime and strengthen regional responses to emerging threats. Officials additionally explored strategies to manage irregular migration and improve collaboration in tackling illicit trafficking networks operating across the hemisphere.
The engagements reflect the growing importance of the Guyana-United States relationship, which has expanded significantly in recent years through increased co-operation in energy, security, trade, investment and democratic governance.
Accompanying Minister Todd and Foreign Secretary Persaud were Ambassador Samuel Hinds, Advisor Wazim Mowla, and Minister Counsellor Keishanna Sullivan.
The meetings form part of Guyana’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships with key international allies while advancing national interests in areas critical to the country’s long-term economic growth, security and regional stability.
