A 62-year-old wheelchair-bound woman lost her life after becoming trapped in a fire that destroyed her home at Number Two Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, early Tuesday morning.
Dead is Bibi Shafroon Ramprashad, known as “Zina,” of Lot 95 Number Two Settlement.

According to her husband, 64-year-old Lokenath Ramprashad, he had left home around 19:00hrs on Monday to report for duty as a watchman at the Pooran Landfill site.
He said he received the devastating news around 04:30hrs on Tuesday after being contacted by his eldest son, who informed him that their home had been engulfed in flames.
Ramprashad explained that his wife, who suffered from a medical condition and relied on a wheelchair, was alone in the house when the fire broke out and was unable to escape.
The blaze completely destroyed the building and its contents.
The grieving husband estimates that the family suffered losses exceeding $20 million.
The Guyana Fire Service has launched an investigation into the fire and is working to determine its cause.
