THIRTY-EIGHT persons were arrested on Tuesday after authorities shut down six illegal mining operations in the Mazaruni Mining District, Region Seven, as part of an ongoing crackdown on unlawful mining activities.
The enforcement exercise was carried out by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) through its Corps of Wardens, in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force, following reports of illegal mining activities in the area.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the six illegal operations were being conducted within a quarry area.
During the operation, authorities arrested 38 individuals and seized several pieces of equipment and machinery that were being used to support the unlawful activities.
The ministry said surveillance measures have since been implemented in the area to monitor activities and prevent a return of illegal mining operations.
In a statement, the ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining across the country.

“The Government of Guyana maintains a zero-tolerance policy on illegal mining and will continue to take decisive action to detect, disrupt and prosecute all unlawful activities in the sector,” the ministry said.
The ministry also warned industry stakeholders that illegal mining activities will not be tolerated under any circumstances, noting that enforcement efforts will continue as authorities work to safeguard the country’s mining sector and natural resources.
