—UN official praises six decades of resilience, growth and international partnership
UNITED Nations Resident Coordinator in Guyana, Jean Kamau, commended the country’s “remarkable journey of resilience, growth, and development” since attaining independence.
“As Guyana proudly celebrates its independence, the United Nations joins the people of this beautiful nation in reflecting on a remarkable journey of resilience, growth, and development,” she said, praising six decades of partnership and national progress.
Kamau highlighted that 1966 marked a pivotal year in Guyana’s history, noting that the country not only gained independence in May but also became a member of the United Nations later that year.
“In 1966, Guyana achieved two historical milestones, gaining independence in May and joining the United Nations family shortly thereafter in September. These two moments are deeply connected, reflecting a young nation stepping confidently onto the world stage,” she stated.
Reflecting on the 60-year relationship, the Resident Coordinator underscored that cooperation between Guyana and the UN has evolved in tandem with the country’s own social and economic transformation.
She said the partnership has supported progress across key sectors, including health, education, climate resilience, governance, gender equality, human rights, and sustainable development in all ten regions of the country.
“On behalf of the United Nations in Guyana, I extend warm congratulations to the government and the people of Guyana on this independence anniversary.”
